JAS (The Join in Award Scheme) is designed to encourage, capture and celebrate the personal achievements and interests of learners.
How does the award work?
The JAS Award has 3 levels: White, Green & Gold. Each level has 4 sections which can run at the same time or one after the other, in any order. Those sections are:
My Interests – a hoppy, interest or skill
Get Active, Stay Active – A sport or physical activity
Me and My World – A community or nature based project
Adventure – outdoor activities
Activities can take place across school, home, in the local community, or clubs.
These encourage children to join in with a range of activities as they develop the four capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
Why do we do the award?
We think it’s great to celebrate the children’s interests and achievements, and support their agency and autonomy in documenting, sharing and reflecting on these experiences. Despite having a small population and limited access to clubs, and structured activities, there is a huge diversity of skills, knowledge and wider achievement within the school. The JAS award helps us encourage the children to contribute to our island and wider community through orchard days, beach cleans, tree planting and much more, while practicing out school values of being creative, active, respectful and resilient.
How can I support the children?
Parents can let us know what the children have been up to and send us photos if you have them. We will send monthly reminders but please feel free to share pictures and stories any time. The wider community of islanders and visitors can help us by telling the children about things they have been up to, because the children might not have heard about the activities before and might like to give it a try!
