Tree Planting In The Sandavore Woodland Creation Area

on

Just before the Easter Holidays, we visited the Sandavore woodland creation area with Tash to plant trees as part of a Sponsored Tree Plant, with the money raised being split between the Eigg Tree Nursery and Fèis Eigg. In total, we planted 68 trees and raised 245 pounds!

P2 and P7 learners

We went into 4 teams, we were called Treesaster because I fell over 26 times and got really muddy, but the good thing is I got a sticker at the end.

My team was called Tadhgan King of the Eiggians, because Tadhgan is great. We managed to plant 30 trees, it was 68 altogether.

Tadhgan did a demo, he showed us how to do it, and then we went off into our teams, and we planted our own trees. There was these wee sticks that showed us where to plant tree, you also had to put the guardian on and then smoosh the mud back on.

There weren’t many trees there, so that’s why it was woodland creation. And Coby was really cute.

It will take about 20 years for them to get big.  When I am older, I will walk up to those trees and say wow. When we are older, we might see those trees grown big with our kids, that’s nuts.

I learned an easy way to plant a tree. So you get the tree, you dig a hole, and then you put the tree in, stomp around a little bit, and then put a guard on.

There are some that you can grow in a bog and some that you can’t. We learned that birch was very good for watery places. We planted rowan trees in dry places, and there was an ash tree which was also dry. We were planting ash because they are getting a disease. Ross called it ash Tash, and everyone found that funny.

We managed to plant 11. Ellis, Colm, and Tadhgan managed to plant 30!

We also found a cool moss seat, which we all sat on, and Jess kept falling off.

We are called treesaster because disasters kept happening, Ness fell over about 1000 times, and I hurt my knee, but I have recovered from it now.

It was very fun. Coby was probably the loudest of everyone with his squeaky ball.

Colm’s granny estimated 15 trees to be planted, but we actually planted 68!!

Primary 2 and Primary 7 learners

I enjoyed planting with Freya and Agnes, and we gave them all names.

I enjoyed throwing the ball for Coby and collecting sponsorships. Mum phoned people, and they all gave me 20 pounds, but Sonny only gave me 10.

I also enjoyed getting the stickers and the easter egg. I loved flying the kite even though it wasn’t really windy enough.

When I sat down on a piece of moss, I kept falling down, but finally, the last time, I managed to not fall.

The trees were called ash and birch, and in the ground that was dry, you would put the dry trees, and in the ground that was wet put the wet ones. Also, there was a willow tree there, too.

I’ll be in my thirties when the trees are big, and that makes me a bit terrified.

Primary 2 and Primary 1 learners

It was a really good day. I was on Jenna’s team with Oran and Ness, and I was the one that gets the trees and put the trees in. Jenna was the one that holds all the sticks when we took them out, Oran was the one who did the shovelling, Ness was the one who got the guards.

The tricky part is that the guards are really tricky to open, but Oran gave Ness some help. After you put the guard on, you push it down a little so you can see the top of the tree poking out.

We went in Charlie’s bus, which was fun. Ness fell over like 1000 times.

Me, Tadhgan , and Colm were in a group, and we managed to plant 30 trees, because we all had a job. We were planting rowan and ash. The thing was, you stick the spade in the ground, and you just wiggle it around, so it was actually pretty easy.

I enjoyed digging holes, that was fun. Everything was fun, but especially digging the holes.
