Eigg primary has signed up to be a Rights Respecting School (RRS), having already been awarded the Bronze Award, which recognises that we are Rights Committed, and most recently the Silver Award (Rights Aware). We are now working toward the Gold Award. See our action plan for the Silver Award here. Stay tuned for our Gold Award Action Plan.
We have been learning about how we can put the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within our school, our community and beyond. As a RRS we place children’s rights at the heart of school policy and practice, supporting leaders and teachers to empower and strengthen each pupil’s sense of belonging, value their voice, and create an environment for respectful, pupil-informed learning.
Here’s some of the work we have been doing on the ‘ABCDE’ of the of the UNCRC.
- Rights are for ALL children. (Universal)
- Rights are there at BIRTH. (Inherent)
- Rights CANNOT be taken away. (Inalienable)
- Rights DO NOT have to be earnt. (Unconditional)
- All rights are EQUALLY important. (Indivisible)
We have also been embedding rights in daily learning and life at school, including school projects, fundraising, and our own class charter.
In a Rights Respecting School, duty bearers are the adults responsible for ensuring children experience their rights, so the staff, parents and volunteers involved in Eigg Primary. Since children are the “rights holders,” duty bearers must respect, protect, and fulfil these rights.
The learners have chosen 4 articles for their school charter and listed ways these can be supported.
Article 19 – We have the right to be safe
Article28 – We have the right to education
Articcle 24 – We have the right to health
Article 31 – We have the right to rest, relax and play.
We are so proud of the work we have done to promote pupil voice and choice into the daily life of the school and to make our school a place where children’s rights are promoted, celebrated and respected, in a meaningful way.
