Written by two of our P1 and P3 learners
We have been learning lots of different things.
Yesterday Mr Merrick had written down lots of visits to space on the screen and then we picked some. And then we wrote the year on the top and sorted them all out in order.
Peggy Whitson was one person who travelled into space. She landed on the moon. She was all by herself.
We went outside and made pictures of the planets orbiting the sun. We used chalk and drew it on the ground.
We asked an astronomer some questions. Jess’ question was the first one to be answered. It was “How big is the moon?” The astronomer didn’t actually give an answer, but it is pretty big. You can fit 4 moons across the earth’s equator.
Oran’s was: Will Mercury ever get bigger? The answer was no.
Ness asked how many stars are there in the universe? And there are lots. If you are in a space ship and you go all the way to space, there are so many stars that it would keep going and going and it would never end.
You can’t breathe in space. You need to take oxygen form earth with you.

Freya and Oran’s drawing of the planets orbiting the sun.

Agnes and Ross’ drawing of the planets and their distance from the sun.

Colm and Jess’ scale model comparing the sizes of the planets.

Space travel timeline
The children have been working hard creating this excellent space travel timeline. They had to explore significant events within the history of travel into space and find out some additional information about each event. Then they used their research to create their own timeline of significant events within space history. 🚀 Well done everyone!
