Pruning our fruit trees in March

Freya (P6)

We went to the orchard at the start of the day. We got into pairs and walked down to the trees. We had a look at the damage the rabbits did. They took the bark off the apple trees. It was really cool because Laura told us that the plum trees have some sort of toxin on their bark that rabbits don’t like to eat. This is really clever because the rabbits won’t eat their bark. So we didn’t have to wire those. On the apple trees we put some green wire around the trunks so that the rabbits can’t get to the trees. On the branches you have to cut dead bits off right at the end. And if it’s on the trunk you have to leave it if the bark is missing, you can’t do anything about it. I think the trees will survive but if the rabbit eats all the way through, it won’t be able to survive because the tree won’t be able to take water and nutrients all the way up through its rings.

To put the protective wire on you just wrap the green netting around the trunk and then you get this thick wire, a bit like fencing wire. You bend it into a semi circle, so you have an arch. Then you put it through the bottom of the green wire and stick it in the ground so that the green wire stays in place.

It was really fun. The time went by so quick.

We pruned the bits of the tree which are dead and some bits with canker. Canker is like a disease that trees get . It comes in mist and rain.

Ross (nursery)

We had partners. We walked with our partner. Oran was my partner.

The rabbits can’t eat the tree with the wire. I found a hammer made of wood. It’s really good. One time in my dream I had a hammer that is made out of wood, just like the one I found.

Laura was teaching us how to prune the trees

Huge thanks to Laura for teaching us!
